The Necromancer creates spectacular undead units, such as the Bone Collector, a crablike monstrosity which eats corpses to strengthen itself.

  • The Necromancer Player Class: The Necromancer’s legions march to establish an eternal kingdom, unifying all the world’s races in death.
  • Embrace forbidden powers and reign for eternity! New mechanics such as the Race Governance system, which allows players to tailor the features of each race in their empire to meet their strategic needs, add new layers of depth to empire development and diplomacy. With the introduction of the Tigran and Frostling races and the new Necromancer class, players must adapt to a world on the brink of cataclysmic change. This is indeed a disadvantage in the early game, but once you turn those leaders into Archliches it becomes a lot less of a problem.Triumph Studios, the creators of the Overlord and Age of Wonders series, today reveal the Age of Wonders III: Eternal Lords expansion which will be released along with the new Mac and Linux ports of the game.Įternal Lords is the major, second expansion for the acclaimed strategy game Age of Wonders III, marking one year of continuous development since its release. It seems like other heroes aren't as strong to have around when your leader is a necro too, since they can't get morale buffs and the like. The Necromancer is the only leader who can face a though battle against a powerful enemy and still emerge stronger than before. Once a late-game Necromancer attacks, he needs not halt his advance for anything, where other leaders need to secure new holdings and wait for replenishment for incurred losses.

Conquer a well defended city as a Necromancer and you get a free garrison so your main army can move on immediately to the next victim. Throw a lot of expensive powerful units at a Necromancer and the next turn he'll throw a significant portion of those units back at you for free.

I mean, yeah, killing a strong unit and bringing it back to life is neat, but is that all there is to it? It can even be returned from destruction quite easily by the late game, so it will be quite experienced. When lead by a hero, it also gets +1 defense, +1 resistance and some reduced spirit weakness. A lategame ghouled unit has +7 health, some fire resistance, +300 happiness, life stealing, Devout Slayer, Support Slayer, +2 physical melee damage, +2 blight melee damage. Being undead makes your units invulnerable to blight damage and morale loss and well protected against frost, at the cost of vulnerability to fire and especially spirit and -1 defense. You get this, but mostly in the shape of researched upgrades and global buff spells. I haven't really played one too much yet, but it seems like they should have some really strong strengths to make up for the fact that your units can't heal naturally. Basically a Necromancer that reaches this stage is a relentless unstoppable tide of death and destruction. Invoke Death gives you a chance to remove noisome enemies in an instant. Ghoul Curse allows you to immediately raise new armies each time you enter combat, and if you can sustain Age of Death for a few turns it gets even more fun. Now you're throwing out loads of debuffs in combat, reducing even the most fearsome enemy units into easy pickings. The ability to resurrect lost units on the fly, first by your heroes and then even by Reanimators, means your armies rarely have to wait for reinforcements to replenish losses and your units will quickly level up. Midgame things start to get interesting.Suddenly most of your troops have Life Stealing while all your supports can heal. Undead Plague can be a real problem for an opponent if cast early in the game, while boosting your own cities. Lost Souls are surprisingly durable against most early game units, especially against units already suffering from Despair and are great sacrificial lambs to pull enemies into vulnerable positions due to Undying. Necro heroes can get the morale destroying Inflict Despair and life stealing in the first couple of levels, making them good tanks. You start out with a slightly stronger army and are nearly guaranteed a second Necro hero as first pick. You do get some really interesting tools to compensate for this though. Lack of decent healing options really hurts, though it can be mitigated by maximizing the use of the Necro hero's healing spell in tactical combat.
